Character Profiles & Pronunciations
Here's a who's who of the characters of Pure Fyre, along with my personal attempt at explaining the pronunciation of their names. You're welcome. :-)

Arisan (Eriss-an):
The beloved king of Gelyfed. He is wise and experienced in the ways of the Pure Fyre that each king of Gelyfed inherits from his predecessor. Under Arisan’s rule Gelyfed was a blissful Utopia. But things are changing and a shadow is about to fall over Gelyfed. Now it will be up to Arisan’s son, Eofyn, to take action where no king has had to before.

Afor (A-for):
The fierce king of Gaernod. He holds a deep grudge against the kingdom of Gelfyed for their special abilities given to them by a force known as the Fyre. He has plotted for many years, and upon the death of Gelyfed’s King Arisan and the crowning of his pathetic son, Afor seizes his opportunity and attacks Gelyfed. The kingdom falls to his soldiers without resistance.

Spyre (Spy-er):
A man of Gaernod seeking to trade the rags of his kingdom for the riches of Gelyfed, provided they don’t kill him first. Oh, and there is that little problem of Gelyfed having been conquered by Spyre’s own king. He’ll have to sort that out too.

Ryne (Rine):
Spyre’s older brother and a high-ranking soldier of Afor’s army. He looks down on Spyre for not having the same pride in Gaernod’s brute force that he does. After the conquering of Gelyfed, Ryne is sent after the fleeing King Eofyn to capture and return him to Afor.

Eofyn (Ay-o Fin):
Young, newly-crowned king of Gelyfed. He can’t seem to work out how to connect to the Pure Fyre, which he was meant to have inherited upon his father’s death. When the king of Gaernod attacks Eofyn’s kingdom, he sees an opportunity to redeem himself without the help of the Pure Fyre, but he has to abandon his people to do it.

Pyram (Peer-am):
Eofyn’s closest friend and advisor. Adopted from the streets of Gelyfed by King Arisan himself, Pyram is fiercely loyal to Eofyn and finds the prospect of a journey outside of Gelyfed’s white walls to be too good to resist.

Lissa (Liss-a):
Future Queen of Gelyfed and Eofyn’s betrothed. She is a calm and serene healer with a level head. The vision of morality in Gelyfed falls on her shoulders when Afor conquers the kingdom and lays siege to the castle.

Darian (Dairy-an):
The Liaison to the Fyre and the keeper of the faith in Gelyfed. It is his duty to ensure that the people of Gelyfed feel secure in the abilities gifted to them by the Fyre.

Elene (El-ine):
Darian’s wife who takes care of their three-and-a-half children, and eventually half of their neighborhood once Gaernod soldiers have conquered the kingdom. She opens her home to those who lost theirs in the attack and tries to maintain a sense of normality for the sake of her family and her neighbors.

Ness (Ness):
Darian and Elene’s oldest child. She is destined to inherit her father’s position and is very eager to make herself useful. The ignorance of her kingdom after Gelyfed’s fall is more than she is willing to bear. With the absence of the Gelyfed’s king, Ness takes matters into her own hands and attempts to face Afor herself.

Byre (Bye-er):
Ness’s younger brother who has yet to receive his gift from the Fyre. Byre conceals his embarrassment at not having discovered his talent through quick wit and slinging insults at Ness and her overt sense of pride in her own gift.

Attelle (Uh-Tell):
A young, gentle employee of Gelyfed’s castle. The Fyre has gifted him with the ability to read and relay people’s thoughts. When Gelyfed falls, Atelle finds himself caught in the middle of Afor’s attempts to control the people and Ness’s attempts to thwart Afor.

Lorette (Lore-Et):
An employee of the castle gifted with excellent health. Her ability makes her a target for Afor when he steals the throne and very nearly causes her to lose her mind.

Gesamne (Jess-Em-knee):
Gelyfed’s talented matchmaker, and an even more talented gossip. She takes the relationships of Gelyfed’s youth into her own hands whether asked to or not. When her house is destroyed in the invasion, Gesamne takes refuge in Darian and Elene’s home and begins to meddle with Ness’s own relationship status, much to Ness’s annoyance.

Byrd (Bird):
A midwife of Gelyfed. She, too, takes advantage of Elene’s hospitality after the invasion, and finds herself posed with the struggle between losing her Fyre to Afor or defying his control for the sake of Elene’s imminent need of her gifts.

Faran (Fair-an):
An elf of Tweogan forest. By nature, Faran is forced to question everything he thinks or hears. This leads to some frustration for Spyre when Faran is assigned to be his guide through the forest.

Dugan (Doo-gan):
A troll of the Aforthian Mountains. Angry by nature, he takes out his frustration on Spyre when he is given the responsibility of helping Spyre rid the mountains of Afor’s soldiers.

Soru (Soar-oo):
Part of an accusing race of creatures known as wisps, which resemble dust particles floating in the air. Soru convinces Spyre to take him along on the journey over the Modwen Sea, at great expense.

Rowan (Row-an):
A member of the sea-folk of Modwen Sea. Once a fair and forgiving race, Rowan and her people have become suspicious of humans after Afor’s men took advantage of their hospitality. Upon meeting Spyre, Rowan’s first instinct is to attempt to kill him.

Lif (Leaf):
A childlike, willowy Sprite of Laefa Pinewood. It is her job to help Spyre finish his journey to Gelyfed, but only after he is tested to ensure that his intentions are just and that he is not like the other citizens of Gaernod.

Lateo (Lah-te-oh):
A resident of the otherworld of Bryta. He guides Spyre on his journey from Gaernod to Gelyfed, and beyond.

Cuman (Koo-mon):
The stone dragon that silently watches over Gaernod. Legend says that in a time of great disorder, the two ancient dragons would animate to reestablish the balance of Curnen.

Swelgan (Swell-gon):
The stone dragon that presides over the city of Gelyfed, and the second dragon of legend.
